Parenting is such as important job, and one of the things you have to do as a parent is set a good example for your children. That can be hard to do, because you’re so used to doing things a particular way. Why should you change? Kids listen to what you say, but what they notice most is what you’re doing. By keeping that in mind, you’ll be more likely to be careful about the things you do in front of them. Eventually, that will spill over to the times when they aren’t right around you. In short, you can become a better person in every aspect of your life when you strive to be a better parent.
You don’t have to be perfect. People make mistakes, and your children know this. If you keep making the same mistakes over and over, though, or if you end up with serious problems that are either illegal or simply dangerous, your children (and other people in your life) might not be so quick to forgive. Focus on the kinds of things that matter to you and that you know will matter to your children. Don’t assume that they don’t know what’s going on.
If you can quit smoking, for example, that’s a big victory. You should also avoid drugs and alcohol, and not overeat or become too sedentary. There are many simply things you can do to set a good example, including being kind to people. It’s not always easy to do that, especially when people aren’t always kind to you, but that doesn’t mean you should just give up. If you keep being your best and trying to do better, you can show your children that real people do make mistakes but that they keep trying, and that’s a valuable life lesson.
